ProPublica seeks a freelance editor to work on Electionland, a project covering voting rights and election integrity. This is a temporary position, starting immediately and running through November 2020.
What you will be doing:
Guide and edit election-related stories that ProPublica is working on with local partners.
Work closely with ProPublica’s Electionland partner manager on the overall project.
Work with ProPublica staff on strategy for rolling out the stories.
We’re looking for someone who:
Can demonstrate excellence conceptualizing stories, guiding reporting and writing.
Has the ability to help turn excellent reporting into riveting prose.
Aches to tell important, impactful stories — especially local ones.
Has an appetite for — and, ideally, experience with — collaborating with other newsrooms.
Is excited about all the possible ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data-digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
The ideal candidate will also have experience covering elections, and reporting using data and public records.
We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above, or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form. Deadline for applications is July 19.
Given the current coronavirus situation, which is likely to extend through Election Day, this position is expected to be entirely remote. It is an independent contractor temporary position and does not include benefits.
