ProPublica is seeking an experienced editor devoted to journalism with moral force to lead its new investigative unit in the Northwest.
The editor will hire and supervise three reporters who will be based in Washington, Oregon, Alaska or Idaho, as well as edit three Local Reporting Network partners based at newsrooms in the region. This will be ProPublica’s fifth regional hub, complementing our presence in the Midwest, South and Southwest as well as our joint initiative in Texas with The Texas Tribune. This is our first hybrid local effort in which an editor will work with both ProPublica staffers and LRN partners.
The Northwest is a diverse and important region — a major technology hub (home to Amazon and Microsoft), an important gateway to international trade, a harbinger for the effects of climate change and a home of abundant natural resources.
This editor will have the responsibility to guide, edit and elevate the work of six reporters whose goal is to ultimately create compelling investigations that spur change.
This position is full time and includes benefits. It will be based in the Northwest; we are open to candidates based in or willing to relocate to Washington, Oregon, Alaska or Idaho.
The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $195,000.
This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
What you would be doing:
- Helping to hire and then overseeing three staff investigative reporters who will cover Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.
- Editing three Distinguished Reporters from our Local Reporting Network, being a part of the selection of LRN partners and conducting LRN training sessions.
- Working with ProPublica researchers, data visualization reporters, engagement reporters, audience and video staffers, and story producers.
- Partnering with other news organizations on projects and stories.
- Setting the tone for coverage in an important region with many untold stories.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a track record — as either an editor or reporter — of landing revelatory stories about abuses of power.
- Has previous experience leading a team, office, bureau or newsroom and the skills to foster a culture of inclusion, execute a vision and create team camaraderie among a distributed staff.
- Aches to tell stories that are both important and powerfully told.
- Is truly excited about all the possible ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data-digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
- Has a track record that shows a commitment to diversity in all ways, from ensuring that story topics and sources reflect the communities we cover to empowering a team of journalists who bring with them a variety of identities, journalism backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Really likes working with others. We’re a collaborative news organization. We want the same for this new team.
- Has knowledge of the Northwest, though that’s a plus, not a requirement. We’re interested in the vision you have for the newsroom and for the impactful work we can do here.

Let us know how your editing shaped and improved the stories. Don’t be shy — tell us what worked (numbers and evidence of impact are welcome!) and how you’d do it differently next time. - Your thoughts on local or regional projects ProPublica should tackle in the Northwest. What kind of stories grab your attention? How should they be told? Be expansive: Are these more effective as narratives, hard news stories, immersive interactives or something else? Please share at least one specific story idea as well.
- Your resume.
