We are expanding our Local Reporting Network and are hiring a research fellow.

We launched the Local Reporting Network last year to support local journalism by covering the salaries of, and providing editorial support for, reporters doing investigative journalism at news organizations across the country.

In the first class of Local Reporting Network projects, we’ve covered everything from PTSD in first responders to West Virginia’s natural gas industry. Researchers have contributed to those stories, and even written some of their own.

So what will the role of a research fellow be? The fellow will work with our Local Reporting Network editors and researcher to help local journalists find the public records that will shape their story. No two Local Reporting Network stories are alike, but researchers may help Local Reporting Network reporters learn to use research tools, file FOIA requests or connect the dots between bits of information, depending on the project.

This fellowship is for somebody who has experience with or a strong enthusiasm for public records, databases such as LexisNexis and Pacer, and FOIA requests. The ideal candidate has a meticulous attention to detail, a passion for digging and strong reporting skills. The fellow will work closely with reporters and editors to help with ad hoc requests while also balancing longer term research projects.

We want to hire journalists who bring a diversity of experiences, talents and viewpoints to their work.
