ProPublica is offering two fellowships, supported by the Scripps Howard Foundation, to train the next generation of journalists. Applicants can choose from two tracks: visual journalism and newsletter reporting. The fellowships run for a year, from June 2021 through June 2022, pay $50,000, and include full benefits.
Illustrator and Visual Journalism Fellow
Illustration is a crucial part of ProPublica’s storytelling, representing stories on invisible, complex systems, subjects with protected identities, and circumstances outside of the reach of photography. You’ll be collaborating with ProPublica’s art director and the editorial visuals team to create illustrations, animations, photo illustrations and visual art to accompany our published work. Our ideal applicant is someone who has a strong interest in data and storytelling, is embarking upon a career as an illustrator/visual journalist and is hoping to create a portfolio of strong and expressive work for the future. You do not need to have a background in journalism. Applicants from fine art and interdisciplinary backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
Newsletter Reporting
ProPublica’s award-winning newsletter program has brought readers deeper into our journalism through original reporting and illuminating writing. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with investigative reporters to explain and contextualize findings, as well as doing reporting — and plenty of writing — of your own. We’re looking for someone with a journalism background and an interest in email newsletters.
ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
Here are the details of the fellowship program and here is the application. The deadline is Oct. 30.
The positions will ultimately be based in New York, but may start remotely as public health circumstances dictate.
